Chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics are not easy subjects, demanding quite a lot of physics in some complicated settings. Thus, it is all the more impressive that Paul Houston has managed to write this extraordinarily clear and concise text that is accessible to an advanced undergraduate.

Do not get me wrong; the prerequisites for this book are extensive. A good grasp of basic newtonian mechanics, quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and statistical thermodynamics are musts. But nothing is needed beyond what can be expected from a good, stiff one-year course in physical chemistry.

From the first chapter on the kinetic theory of gases, Houston's focus on the physics - on keeping derivations short and clear, on connecting formulae with sound physical intuition - is striking. It does not lag as the book goes on. Houston continues with a clean exposition of empirical chemical kinetics and how to integrate and/or simplify the resulting differential equations. The grungy business of theoretical kinetics - how to kludge your way to a theoretical gas-phase reaction rate constant - is well treated after that. In the third chapter, Houston delivers an elegant and unified flux-driven treatment of transport phenomena. He gets the basic equations correct up to a numerical factor with a minimum of effort. This is beautiful; I wish chemical engineers would read this before beginning their own transport travails! There are then several chapters on the chemistry of more complicated systems, like solution-phase, solid surface-phase, and photochemical reactions. While I haven't read these, I am sure they are wonderful. The high point, in my opinion, is the final chapter on reaction dynamics. Its ongoing tacit motivation is the question, "How does a hydrogen fluoride laser work?" Read, and you will learn. In doing so, you will also become acquainted with the basic concepts in gas-phase reaction dynamics: the details of the crossed-beam molecular scattering experiment, the concept of a potential energy surface, and what these can tell us about reaction mechanisms. Throughout Houston, the emphasis on looking up from the math and seeing the physical big picture prevents the blind and frustrating equation-crunching which is all too common in the quantitative sciences.

This little book is really amazing. It takes you from a good undergraduate background to the forefront of modern chemical physics research with minimal pain and maximal excitement. Read it.

Small book! However, dense with a wealth of information.

This book provides a very thorough introduction to chemical kinetics at an almost rigorous level. The mathematical derivations are given direct physical interpretations (something that is missing in many physical chemistry books) that are on par with physics books. Its introduction states that a full year of calculus is all that is required. I totally disagree. At the very least, the math requirements are multivariable calculus (double and triple integration appear through out the text; vector calculus {gradient , divergence, & laplacian}; partial derivatives), methods of approximation (power series & Taylor expansions), & working knowledge of ordinary & partial differential (Fick's second law of diffusion) equations are helpful in understanding how the solutions are determined. Moreover, the homework exercises present problems where Laplace transforms (small section is provided for Laplace transforms) are needed to solve the D.E.'s and P.D.E.'s. What is most surprising is that from the first page the author directly dives into kinetics with clear & precise definitions without getting sidetracked or giving any unwanted wordiness or jargon. In no way is this book what I call difficult but very accessible. The author never makes any of the subjects more difficult than they have to be in understanding the material. Mr. Houston's book stays focused to kinetics and its outcome is a book with few pages but dense & rich with material, a welcomed addition for anyone in the fields of theoretical, physical chemistry, or chemical physics. In addition, a plethora of homework problems are presented. However, it has been difficult to find the solutions manual for the problems in the book.

The book is good, but it is not organized/formatted well, so it was difficult to follow sometimes. Note that this book is paperback and black and white pages.

*Starred Review* Biographies of the great Tudor queen abound, but this solid, even exciting one pursues a particular tack and thus takes itself outside the usual run of standard treatments. Ronald is interested in pursuing the life and reign of Elizabeth I in terms of her specific effect on the founding of what was to become the vast British Empire, which reached its zenith in the nineteenth century. As seen here, it was paramount for the queen to make herself secure on the English throne in the face of Catholics at home and abroad, who preferred her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots; in addition, her personal security had to be founded on the security of her kingdom on the world stage—the two, as she saw it, went hand in hand. The queen was, as Ronald has it, an "astute businesswoman" who realized that for state-security purposes, she needed lots of money. Although Ronald insists Elizabeth Tudor was "no empire builder," the fascinating picture drawn here is of her intense working relationship with the merchant and gentleman adventurers who, out on the high seas, would secure money for their beloved monarch, and, in the process, "inadvertently," as Ronald posits it, move England into a solid financial status that would, in turn, foster empire. Intensely Interesting!

This is as interesting and well written a book on England's 16th Century emergence, from third world nation status to global superpower stature, as you are likely to find. I especially appreciate the consistency with which author Susan Roland puts the economics of Queen Elizabeth's decisions into today's terms. This goes a long way toward making Elizabeth's decisions understandable. Piracy was an amazingly big business. With single voyages generating over $1.0 billion in today's equivalent, utilizing current values enables readers to readily understand how large an economic driver piracy was to England's evolution as a superpower. Plunder became England's primary growth industry, the financial bedrock upon which England's global dominance over the next 400 years was built. Since most of this wealth was taken from Spain, plunder also planted the seeds which would ultimately destroy Spain's preeminent position in world affairs.

After Philip of Spain stifles England's ability to export wool, its primary cash crop, early in Elizabeth's reign, England subsequently suffers from an inability to either fund its defense or protect its interests on the European stage. Beset by powerful enemies both secular and religious, England struggles with Spain and the Catholic Church externally and Scotland internally. Moreover, England's allies were in disarray. France was often religiously bipolar, while Holland, Belgium (then referred to as the Low Countries) and Portugal were economically dependant. Revolution was rife and Elizabeth's monarchy was tenuous to say the least.

With this as the backdrop to relations in the neighborhood, Elizabeth made common cause with what history refers to as her adventurers. Piracy had been practiced along most European and Mediterranean coasts for centuries. But under Elizabeth, English piracy became a global, state sanctioned art form, an economic necessity for survival that harvested the seas for the Queen's Treasury. Elizabeth begins to organize with John Hawkins' voyages to the Caribbean where he razed whole towns and ravaged Spanish shipping. Next was Francis Drake's Caribbean activities and his subsequent circumnavigation of the Earth which plucked the best value from Spain's global empire. By the time of the Spanish Inquisition, the Catholic-Protestant debates were in full tilt and undeclared war existed between England, Spain and the Catholic Church with numerous Spanish and Catholic assassination attempts on Elizabeth's life. England's piracy was no longer small, single voyage ventures but numbered over 200 ships, with individual fleets varying from 15 to 30 vessels and employing between 500 - 1,000 men. Under the guidance of veteran sea dogs Hawkins and Drake, piracy had grown into England's de facto Navy, becoming sufficiently powerful to stave off Spain's Armada when Philip's anger bubbled over and he unleashed that 500 ship weapon in 1588.

This is an amazing story, well told, which builds with a power and a mastery of detail that is quite appealing. I came away from this work understanding that both England, and subsequently her American Colonies, were built on the bedrock of piracy. Moreover, the great explorations and colonization efforts of Martin Frobisher, Walter Raleigh and others, were, generally speaking, voyages where pillage and plunder, especially at Spain's expense, were an encouraged and necessary business practice.

Wonderfully detailed and excellently crafted, Roland's work spares no effort in describing the intrigue and confrontation involved in England's rise and Spain's downfall as Europe's dominant global power. This is as good a description of this fascinating portion of history as I have found and a read that is really second to none in explaining the intricacy of the time period covered.

The Pirate Queen is a remarkably worthwhile book.

A Rowdy, Great Read!

Bravo, Elizabeth! Piracy not necessarily being a kosher topic in all circles, this was a wonderful, revealing read! Artful manipulation and exploitation by Elizabeth's 'Gentlemen' brought England to the forefront of history against the oppressive duo of Pope and Spain. Again, the author leaves me feeling as though these characters are here, now, and anxious to hear the outcomes of all their exploits. "Water...have you seen Virginia, as it is today? Could you have ever imagined where your discoveries and adventures would lead?" I hope you know, Sir Walter Raleigh, somehow I hope you know..."Oh, and by the way...we have still not found the fabled 'El Dorado'...I think the Spaniards got it all...drast!"

About the Author
Eric S. Berman, MSA, CPA, CGMA, has over 25 years of governmental accounting and auditing experience and is a Partner with Eide Bailly LLP. Previous to Eide Bailly LLP, he was a quality control principal with a public accounting firm in California. Eric is the author of the Governmental Library for CCH. The Government Library also offers in-depth, interpretive guidance. In addition to this Governmental GAAP Practice Manual, users can access CCH's Governmental GAAP Guide, Knowledge-Based AuditsTM of State and Local Governments with Single Audits, and the Governmental GAAP Update Service. Eric's public sector experience includes being a Deputy Comptroller for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1999 to 2010, and the Chief Financial Officer of the Massachusetts Water Pollution Abatement Trust from 1994 to 1999. Eric is a licensed CPA in Massachusetts. He obtained an M.S. in Accountancy from Bentley University. Eric recently represented the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) as the Vice Chairman of the Government Accounting Standards Advisory Council to GASB. He currently chairs the AGA's Financial Management Standards Board. He also is a previous chair of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Governmental Performance and Accountability Committee and is a former member of the AICPA's State and Local Government Expert Panel. Eric is currently a member of the GASB s Pension Communications Resource Group and has served on previous GASB task forces and working groups assisting in the development of standards. Eric is also a past member of the California Society of CPA's Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee and is past chair of the same committee for the Massachusetts Society of CPAs. He was also the founder and treasurer of a not-for-profit performing arts organization in Pennsylvania. Eric is frequently called upon to consult and train state and local governments throughout the country on governmental accounting and auditing.

Encouraging & Motivational

I have been celibate for almost a year now and I have never been able to go past 3months without having sex but God is Amazing. When I realized my worth and strength and begin to look to God in everything he helped me, he healed me and delivered me from which I thought could never be possible. I always wanted to feel that love, my father was never present in my life but he was a great provider, so was my mother...she was there but not there as in there as a provider but not there when I needed attention,someone to talk to and love. So I turned to men for what my parents lacked and it did me no good but when I turned to God and emptied all the anger,hatred,jealousy, bitterness, confusion and pain out to him and let him love me . he showed me how to love me first and respect my body which is his temple He also showed me how to raise my boys and show them how a woman should love herself first and look to God in all things while remaining faithful and obedient unto him..here to serve his purpose and with me focusing on God and giving him my all will break this generational curse and my boys will not grow up repeating what I would've allowed from man doing to me. I am not married yet and I don't believe that I'm ready yet. However, in the meantime my main focus is God and God's will. I trust him and I know that he will never lead me astray. This book just encouraged me to stand the storm, endure, love myself and look to God in all things I do desire to have a family someday and have me a babygirl with my husband. God knows this and I believe it will happen but I must first be right with him and obedient to him in everything I do. Thank You, Rainie! I am glad you went thru all you went thru and I'm glad God delivered you and used your testimony for a woman like myself and many other women. God bless you!

About the Author

A tribute to her parents

What a positive, life-affirming memoir from the child of a drug addict mother who was murdered and an intense father who killed himself through alcoholism and depression. Well written, too. Author Leah Carroll keeps her balance all the way through -- no pity, justified teenage rebellion and anger, yet a deep love for her troubled father and heartfelt curiosity for her mother. I, too am the daughter of an alcoholic, although one who never had the remarkable relationship with my father as she did with hers. I also know Rhode Island and its "quirks." She nailed it with those descriptions. And like most Rhode Islanders, whether living there or not, there's something about its native born casualties that fortifies one generation and passes through to the next.

I loved you all with all of my heart. We were friends day and neighbors. We played and sang and danced ...and got our pictures taken I always wondered how life turned out for Leah. Thank you beautiful girl for capturing such heartfelt moment take of time...both good and bad. You are a survivor and I am very proud of you!!!! Loved the book...couldn't stop reading till the end.

Sensible and Easy

I have read lots of different child psychology and parent/child relations books. This is the only one I've ever picked up, started to read, and had the thought, "Wow, I actually think the thoughts and advice here make sense." I know it's terribly pushy of me but I'm considering buying it as a Christmas present for everyone I know who relates to children. The book is full of examples and stories that make it easy to relate the knowledge within the book with how it might be applied in the real world. I could instantly see how the language and responses I might be giving my own son could lead to confusion and even battles. The best part about this book is how it encourages you to help your child grow his/her own self esteem. This is one book I'm planning to read, read again, and then copy parts of it to post on the refrigerator as reminders to myself of the kind of parent that I want to be.

Daughter, now 19, living proof this book works . . .

Daughter might not have reached 19 if not for this book! When I was pregnant, a friend insisted I find this book. It was out of print at the time, but I dug up a yellowed copy at a used book store. I read it and although I couldn't envision ever being in many of the situations, it colored everything I did as a parent from the first day. It works beautifully in re-shaping how one relates to all people, not just children. It's easy to change your "script" when the new approach has such an immediate and gratifying result.

Children are human, parents are human!

This book has two main sections, the first about children and their emotional needs, the second more focused on what is going on inside the parents.

For the chapter on (parents') anger alone, this book is worth the money. I also own "How to talk..." and wondered whether this book would have sufficient unique material, and having just finished reading it, I have no regrets at all about buying it. I am a person who struggles to express anger in helpful ways, and this book has plenty of suggestions for me to try. If you thought that parents had to be calm, cool and patient 100% of the time, this book will save your sanity.

I also recommend the book "Between Parent and Child" by Dr Haim Ginott. That book was an incredibly therapeutic book to read for me, helping me to work through why my relationship with my own parents has been such a struggle, helping me to understand why I constantly thought throughout my childhood that they didn't really listen to me.

My background is in Visual Basic programming, and teaching others how to program, so I'm always on the lookout for cool algorithms and fun things to code. Recently, while working on my Kindle book, "VB Strings", the topic of autostereograms came up and the curious question was whether they would work okay on a black and white Kindle display instead of just on printed paper. �The challenge was on!��After a few days of research, and a breakthrough that allowed me to crunch the core algorithm down to just a few lines of code, my first Kindle stereograms were ready to be tested. They worked very well! The quickest way to share the fun was to go ahead and publish a book of stereogram images for the Kindle, and here it is.

John Clark Craig is a prolific author with dozens of books published over the years mainly on the topics of Visual Basic Programming, published by both Microsoft Press and O'Reilly Media. It is what's promised

I'm a long time fan of stereograms (popularly known as Magic Eye, though that's a copyrighted term), at least since I figured out that relaxing my eyes to allow what the left and right eye see to drift apart is what they always meant by trying to look beyond the image. Since these don't rely on any sort of high technology, I thought a book of stereograms was a niche waiting to be filled on the Kindle--apart from looking them up on the browser and hoping for some that were of a decent size for the Kindle screen. So it was just on one of my infrequent notions to search the Kindle store for "stereogram" that I ran across this book last night.

And what's there to say? It works. Images are presented both in landscape and portrait versions, in case you're using a fixed monitor that you can't rotate--this does make for extra page flipping to get to the next image no matter which way you prefer to view it, though. There are 21 images. As far as bang for your buck that's better than some physical books and worse than others. As someone who's pretty good at viewing these it didn't take me long to get through them, but since it's the first and only of its kind I'm not disappointed to have thrown my dollars its way.

It's also worth noting each image includes a bit of text. My first time through the book I merely skipped past it to get to the next image, but if you're interested in stereograms and especially interested in dabbling with making some of your own, there are some useful tips given about what an image does that previous ones didn't, why certain images are designed the way they are, or what sort of tricks were used in their creation. You still might want to skip these the first time, though, if you'd rather try and see what the image is before reading what you're supposed to be seeing.

Works really well on Kindle for Android

I just bought this book because I was looking for something to exercise my eyes. I've been working on improving my vision for awhile, and felt that some eye exercises would be helpful. My vision is off balance, meaning that my right eye sees way better than my left eye, and I'm hoping that these eye exercises will help to improve my left eyes vision. Even with this off balance vision condition, I was able to see the shapes and 3D images on my Android phone. The book is simple and delivers exactly what the author claims. Well worth the money!

Looks great on an e-ink Kindle

A box with random grays is offered. If you stare at it right, a 3D image pops out.

I haven't looked at stereograms in awhile. Often, they were done poster size, and I could never see them. The e-ink Kindle offers high resolution in a small screen setting, so I was able to pick up on these immediately.

I didn't care for the commentary, landscape version, portrait version, silhouette format. I would have preferred landscape, landscape, landscape, all the way through. I'm not sure if I could have handled a stereogram movie, but once I was in the 3D zone, I didn't like having to jump in and out of it.

Still, these are recommended, especially to anyone who hasn't seen them yet.
