The book begins with the first chapter of the fairy tale, in which a foolish queen wishes to exchange her 12 sons for a daughter. An old woman "dressed all in black" overhears the queen and makes the wish come true, granting the queen a daughter but turning her sons into wild swans.

From here the coauthors launch into a back-and-forth structure of telling the story and then stopping to show how it applies to a witch's initiation and transformation. For example, we all must leave the castle in order to heal our past. Starhawk (The Spiral Dance; Truth or Dare, etc.), founder of a new spirituality effort called the Reclaiming Movement, teams up with co-religionist Hilary Valentine for this training and instruction book in magical methods. Their spirituality embraces several popular modern categories, including Wicca, paganism and the goddess movement. The term reclaiming refers to the goddess movement's Eden story, which posits a prehistorical time when matriarchal societies lived in harmony with one another and nature through worship of a female earth goddess, a pristine state that was ended by the rise of patriarchal religions focused on a male sky god. The authors are reclaiming the goddess traditions they believe existed in that ancient paradise, and their book offers others the chance to join in. To suit the needs of their presentation, they have adapted an ancient fairy tale about brothers turned into swans, whose sister wove magic shirts to turn them back into men. The book combines storytelling, instructions for performing magic rituals and advice on how to use these rituals as a form of therapy. The authors adapt popular psychology for an occult audience by translating psycho-jargon into witchcraft terminology. Readers who embrace goddess theology may well find this work instructive, though its advanced magical training will be a bit daunting for beginners. (Oct.)

The Spiral Dance (1979) is probably the best-selling book on contemporary witchcraft. Starhawk has published widely since that pivotal work, but none of her books have had the enormous impact of her first. The Twelve Wild Swans , however, just may replicate the success of Spiral Dance , for it offers a how-to as well as a why-to for aspiring witches. Based on the work of the Reclaiming Tradition, the ecospiritual witchcraft in which Starhawk has been a formative force, the book extrapolates its spiritual training from the European myth named by its title. In that story, the brothers of a princess are magically transformed into swans. She labors in pain and silence to free them, managing to do so just before she would have been killed. Thus, she saves both herself and them. In the tale, Starhawk and Valentine locate the stages of an initiatory journey, which they illustrate with group and individual rituals. In addition, vignettes of self-transformation and social transformation that result from such magical work not only further illustrate but expand the meaning of the text. Another gem from the Reclaiming Community

All too often, books on the Craft seem superficial. One is left with the feeling that there is a deeper mystery that is not being explained, a richer, darker, more passionate way to approach the Old Religion. The works of Starhawk and the Reclaiming Community stand apart from this depressing state of affairs. Each one unearths deep emotion and is filled with insight. This is the real thing, and that reality is felt bone deep.
"Twelve Wild Swans" is no exception. The lessons are based on an old, somewhat unsettling fairy tale. This story is approached from three different directions that enhance eachother. The most important thing, in my opinion, is the stress the authors both put on the seriousness of commiting one's self to the Craft. Witchcraft is a life altering journey, and that journey should not be embarked upon as a fashion statement. The Outer Path sections make this especially clear.
As a book that stresses dedication and a deep commitment to the Goddess, "Twelve Wild Swans" takes its place as a classic on par with, if not exceeding, "Spiral Dance". Thank you Starhawk and the Reclaiming Community!

If you're looking for a metaphysical interpretation of a fairy tale, go straight to Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Estes or Iron John by Robert Bly. Both will leave you with the feeling that you have been respected as a reader, that you have come closer to understanding yourself, and that a folk tale can contain great truths. On the other hand this book by Starhawk was, for me, almost impossible to read at all. Her witchier-than-thou attitude put together with her total self-righteousness, boring hateful feminism, and relentless telling and retelling and retelling of one thin little story is just awful. Sorry I can't agree with the other reviewers.

Kindle -- great reading, but poor implementation of functionalities other textbooks have

First know that I LOVE this book, it is so very detailed. If you are going to limit yourself to a single diagnostic Micro book, THIS Is the one to buy. I have critiques of both the Kindle and the hard copy (yes, I bought both) but still its a text that I savor every time I open it.

I'd been waiting for the new Koneman and hoping it was on Kindle beause I hate carrying the big one around...
THe reason for subtracting 1/2 a stars is that EVERY SINGLE TIME I use the Kindle book...I'm am frustrated with how one has to access the photos & charts. I was just reading about viruses...go to the virus table that gives a brief summary of virus 'families' and damn if the box for rabies doesn't span TWO panes in such a way that I can't see it all at once (see the photo-- the top of the pane is cut off-- I had to go and look at it separately ...that's the kind of think I run into whenever I read the book. My other Kindle textbooks (Bailey and Scott, Mahon) have much better functionality on the Kindle app (using a Ipad Pro). I still love this book but for $100 they could have done a little better.

Now for the half star deduction for the hard copy book, I received it packed very poorly (IF you order it, make sure you order NOTHING else with it..because when I received it shipped with a bulky item this text was laying in the box with NOTHING to secure it OR protect it. Poor packing isn't what made me take away from the rating. It arrived with a wrinkled cover and looking at it I think its one of those cheap covers that will come apart in a year of heavy use (the older edition still looks great after years of use). Something about the book cover seems poorly made. I taped it up with clear packing tape to protect it. A book this good warrants a excellent cover, beause its a book you will go to again and again.

Review of Peanut Butter Principles by Eric Franklin

"Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is a very insightful and encouraging book. Mr. Franklin touches on some very good points on how to encourage children and others to reach their full potential. In Chapter 16, Mr. Franklin brings up his faith and points out something I, myself have learned, that, like the title of the chapter, "Faith Makes all Things Possible Not Easy", is very true. As the author points out, our journey to reach our full potential and to make our lives a success is not easy, but with hard work and perseverence it is possible. Mr. Franklin speaks about how to build up the child's self esteem when helping them. He mentions that they should think for themselves as opposed to giving the child the answers or completing a task for them. Mr. Franklin tells us the importance of persevering in our endeavors and not giving up so easily.

I agree with "Peanut Butter Principles" by Mr. Eric Franklin. Thank you sir, for a very enlightening book, which I, myself can take into account for my own life. I highly recommend "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin for anyone, not just parents, teachers or mentors. It has some very excellent guidelines anyone can put to use in their lives. "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is most definitely 'my cup of tea'!!!

Very practical and insightful!

I just read this book after sending my last child out of the nest. I only wish I could have read it years ago...it would be a great motivator during those tough years. In thinking about my three kids, these are the three princlples that I have seen play out for them:

#10 The difference between a goal and a dream is a deadline.
#12 Talent and intellect does always add up to success. Perseverance does.
#20 Don't worry about what you don't know. Do what you know.

Timeless principles your grandparents taught your parents

Eric Franklin has written a truly useful book for instilling success oriented character traits in your children through 47 Leadership Lessons. In the preface he writes that he grew up 'solidly middle class' and it shows in his lessons. There's nothing here about attachment theory or evolutionary psychology. Instead he has chapters titled Life Is Not Fair. Get Over It, and Your Life Is Not a Rehearsal. My favorite is Everything Happens For A Reason, But Sometimes The Reason Is You're Stupid And You Make Poor Decisions. In five sections he walks readers through principles about self, talent, life lessons, relationships, and good choices. The text is breezy and to the point and Franklin draws widely from his own experiences.

Your grandparents probably took most of these lessons as self evident. You and your parents a little less so. Much of this will be entirely foreign to your children. But just like the new economy and new math we continue to learn that there is nothing new and that there are no short cuts to success and good character. Franklin gives an excellent path for parents and their children.

Hopefully parents will read it to each other as well.

About the Author
Alireza Bahadori, Ph.D., is a research staff member in the School of Environment, Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, Australia. He received his Ph.D. from Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia.During the past twenty years, Dr. Bahadori has held various process and petroleum engineering positions and was involved in many large-scale projects at National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and Clough AMEC PTY LTD. He is the author of 250 articles and 14 books. His books have been published by multiple major publishers, including Elsevier. He has served on the editorial board of a number of journals and is a member of Engineers Australia.

Dr. Bahadori is the recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious Australian Government's Endeavor International Postgraduate Research Award as part of his research in oil and gas area. He also received a Top-Up Award from the State Government of Western Australia through Western Australia Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA) in 2009. Dr. Bahadori serves as a member of the editorial board and reviewer for a large number of journals. He was honored by Elsevier to be an outstanding author of the Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering in 2009.He is member of Institution of Engineers Australia and a chartered engineer (CEng) member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE,) London, UK.

Highly Recommended

"Deep Change" is a book I have added to my recommended reading list.

Interestingly this is not an authoritative guide to better management or special actions; rather a guide that pushes the reader to become self-aware of one's situation within the context of business.

Why then the high recommendation?

In my opinion, this is one of the best books I have encountered. Why? Becuase it takes the simple premise that one must change yourself to change a company and details the implications of that change in perspective in beautiful and exacting detail.

Let me explain my position through the use of a book quote:

"If you perform beyond the norms, you disrupt all the existing control systems. Those systems will then alter and begin to work to routinize your efforts. That is, the systems will adjust and try to make you normal. The way to achieve and maintain excellence is to deviate from the norm. You become excellent because you are doing things normal people do not want to do. You become excellent by choosing a path that is risky and painful, a path that is not appealing to others."

The above made the book worth reading for me.

Thus, Robert Quinn (for me at least) has captured the inherent conflict of business change in the above quote. A key tenet of management is self-awareness of yourself, your team and the hurdles that you will encounter. One hurdle that is oft forgotten is the ability of an organisation to normalise an individual's actions. The book provides great insight in this context and has an excellent list of book references that I am working my way through.

Well Written and Very Appropriate

Deep Change is not to be classified in the pile of cliche'd "self-help" books. This is something more. Written college professor/consultant Robert Quinn, the foundations of this book are based on research, coupled with good insights from the author.

Stagnation runs rampant. We become enveloped in repetition . . . repetition that is poisoning us. So why not change it? Because people fear change. They fear it because it is risky. What this book does is take the reader through the process of change and not just simply developing or dropping habits. This is a deep change, to the person's very core. It is life-changing.

This book is written with business in mind but it is applicable on a personal level as well as a professional level. You do not have to be top management to invoke change. Bringing about the change that you want to see is an internal process. Change within to change without (which can be an unpopular notion as people look to external forces for safety and indicators). But true change in your work and in your life does not come from taking the safe road.

This is a great book for your own development or even for those who follow the transformational leadership research. Though it has a somewhat academic tone, it is a relaxed one and the book is easy to read (it doesn't read like a textbook or anything). Check it out.

Highly recommended

This book was recommended to me by a very successful business executive who said it changed his life. I found it very inspiring, as the concepts apply not just to business but to all areas of life. Everyone can identify some aspect of his or her life that lacks sufficient meaning, an area where a “deep change” is probably needed. Unfortunately, change is hard for most of us, a challenge that only increases with age. Incremental changes along the way are possible, even welcomed. But “deep change” is very difficult, and requires a bit of a leap of faith, as the destination is not always visible. Quinn’s book helps the reader get more comfortable with the notion of walking “naked into the land of uncertainty.” One of my favorite passages is one about an executive, Bill, whose drive to success led to an unhealthy lifestyle of long hours and poor physical health. Many of us can relate to trying to solve problems by working harder. Quinn, however, highlights that such a response ultimately saps one’s vitality, leading to a drop in performance – the opposite of the intended effect. Quinn concludes that monitoring one’s vitality is critical to avoiding the journey toward slow death. Though the book came out in the 1990s, the lessons within it are still very relevant today. By forcing ourselves to answer uncomfortable questions (“How can I increase my own sense of meaning? Howe can I increase my impact?), we create an empowering environment where we have the courage to listen to our inner voice and take risks to get to the next level.

She earned an M.A. in Spanish literature and linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her Ph.D. in language and literacy from the University of California, Berkeley, focused on bilingual reading, second language acquisition, and language issues in American Indian education. Previously, Professor Peregoy taught ESL to adults.� She also taught primary grades in a Spanish-English bilingual education program, and directed a multicultural preschool program. Dr. Peregoy was active in writing California’s guidelines for preparing in-service teachers to work with English language learners. She has published articles on bilingual and second language literacy in the Journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education, The Reading Teacher, Canadian Modern Language Review, Educational Issues of Language Minority Students, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, and Theory into Practice. Dr. Peregoy is fluent in Spanish.

Owen Boyle is Professor Emeritus of Education, San Jose State University, where he coordinated the Bilingual and ESL Program, chaired the Language and Literacy Department, and headed the Reading Specialist Credential and M.A. programs in literacy. At San Jose State Professor Boyle taught courses in second language literacy, language acquisition and reading, multicultural literature, and reading assessment. He received his doctorate at the University of California, where he was Coordinator of the Learning from Text Program and researched and taught students. As Assistant Director of the Bay Area Writing Project (National Writing Project), Owen worked with teachers from all over the world including those from Germany, Panama, Alaska, and California. He served on the California State Superintendent’s panel that developed guidelines for preparing teachers of reading and was instrumental in developing a reading instruction test required for a California multiple subject teaching credential. He has published articles and research in Journal of Educational Issues of Language Minority Students, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of the Association of Mexican-American Educators, Journal of College Reading and Learning, The Reading Teacher, and Reading Research and Instruction. He taught elementary and secondary school where he worked with second language learners for 12 years.

With contributions by Karen Cadiero-Kaplan, Professor at San Diego State University where she chairs the Department of Policy Studies in Language and Cross Cultural Education.� Dr. Cadiero-Kaplan’s publications cover literacy ideologies and practice, English language development, and bilingual education policy and practice. Great Book No Big Changes

The biggest reason I love this book is because it is the same book as the later edition that I needed for school only difference is the chapter name changed a bit but same stuff. What was added was some examples (lack of a better word here) my instructor didn't use those. I really hate spending tons of money on books and I like keeping the ones solely related to my field like this one

This book was developed to introduce students and machining professionals to the basic operations and methods of computer numerical control (CNC) technology. It provides a solid foundation for future advanced design and programming study.

Intended for readers with diverse backgrounds, concepts are presented using an applied, hands-on, step-by-step methodology, which is easy to understand and follow. Using generic examples not tied to a particular brand, coverage includes CNC set-up, operation, tooling, program structure, and machining processes. In addition, reviews of mathematics, blueprint reading, and metrology are included as needed.

Useful and effective illustrations visually support the explanations and program samples.
Readers are shown how to understand the format and concepts of CNC programs.
G-Codes, M-Codes, and the various other letter address codes are all discussed, in addition to operational codes, such as tool changing, offsets, spindles speed, coolant, and program stops.

This textbook was developed to introduce the student to the basics of CNC technology, and to prepare him or her for future CNC machining and programming courses that may follow. Included is related tooling data, machining data, shop mathematics, and CNC machine and control information. Computer Numerical Control clearly distinguishes between CNC machining centers and CNC lathes and will prepare students exceptionally well for CNC machining in each respective area.

First and foremost, this textbook is intended for students with diverse backgrounds. This includes students just out of high school, or students who may have had some training in industry or in the military. These students may just be beginning alternative or second careers. Other students may already be regular employees or trainees in industry. They may need to learn CNC machining in order to improve their skills as a programmer-operator. They all need a timely but meaningful introduction to CNC. Although there is no prerequisite to this book, it is always helpful to have some minimal exposure to CNC machine tools in the workplace.

This book was written because existing books either assume that the reader has extensive knowledge of CNC or are too specialized for a complete understanding of CNC technology. Other books tend to use examples that put too much emphasis on a specific machine, or may concentrate on one part of CNC, such as machine control or programming. These books may be too theoretical or verbose, may include material that is not work oriented, or may not fully provide students a hands-on experience with the knowledge and skills they need to get started on the job.

The pedagogical approach in this book is to stress hands-on application over theoretical material. It applies a step-by-step method that is straightforward, usable, and easy to understand. Because numerous machine tool brands exist, it presents generic examples and illustrations of their common characteristics, including CNC setup, operation, tooling, program structure, and machining. After introducing each of these areas, the book shows how they are intertwined in typical CNC machining centers and CNC lathes. These generic examples give students to-the-point coverage of what they need to know (without material that is just nice to know) to get up and running on the job—efficiently, productively, and safely.

Several chapters include CNC program samples that the student will learn to read block by block. The program examples progress in a spiral fashion. This gives students a good understanding of the unit just completed, making the next unit easier to undertake. Some students may have had courses in mathematics (including trigonometry), blueprint reading, and metrology, as well as other machining-related courses, while others may need a review of these materials. Therefore, these topics coupled with data from the appendixes will be brought into the coverage as needed.

This textbook, then, provides a learning tool that can be used in both educational and in-plant training environments. In education, it will certainly help students develop a better understanding of all the components that make up CNC machining technology. Whenever possible, it is recommended that a CNC laboratory component be included with this course. This will give the student a greater understanding of the material covered in the textbook.

This text material and the methodology have been class tested at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) in the CNC machine-related programs. Feedback was obtained from students, teachers, and employers who subsequently employ these students. After reading this book students, regardless of their background and institutional affiliation, will have a fundamental understanding of CNC technology, CNC terminology, and CNC machine and control operations, and will be able to decipher CNC programs.
