I just gave a presentation of this book to Master's students at a business school and they found the framework most interesting. In particular, seeing yourself as your own company gives you a holistic picture of what's important in any career move. The canvas identifies your strengths and weaknesses to your approach in reaching your career goals. It also provides an interesting handout to use in informational interviewing.

If I had only one book to pick for career hunting I would use "What Color is your Parachute". There is a reason it has sold 10 million copies. I've used it in three major career moves and the results I've achieved make it one of the most influential books I've ever read.

BMY is more useful for you the more work experience you have. It has good use cases based on individuals who have applied it in their own life. Do to its high-level approach I consider it a good addition to the "Parachute book", but not a substitute.

Changed my Perspective - Changed my World

Business Model Generation has been useful for me as a business consultant because I could easily communicate the "story" of any business a client who might be considering changing or buying it. When the community was asked if we wanted to participate in a project to apply this tool to individuals, I readily agreed.

I was expecting to be discussing the mechanics of things like defining Customer Segments for an individual as opposed to an organization. Yes we did that. Every organization has customers or they wouldn't exist. It's typical to start an organizational business model here. But people exist without customers, so where would we base an individual's model? Really interesting stuff; but not yet life changing.

Then the development of Business Model YOU totally surprised me when it began to take a Spiritual (not Religious) turn. Something is Spiritual in my life if it has personal meaning to me. That meaning started to surface when we considered every Business Model to be a kind of blueprint; and agreed that every blueprint is created by an architect to achieve some purpose. To really architect a Business Model for your career, there needs to be some understanding to of your life's purpose.

Suddenly finding, communicating, and creating attractive values for customers became simple compared to finding values that relate my career to my personal purpose. This is really hard work and Tim Clark, the book's author, never tried to dance around it. With surprising simplicity, he took us beyond the modeling world and into ways of looking at our careers as a fulfillment of our personal purposes.

I then realized this is what my clients really wanted when looking at a business. The answer to their concerns was more in their Personal Business Model than in the organization's under consideration. My perception of who I am and why I do things has changed. I am no longer the same person.

Funny, the Business Model YOU experience has changed my perspective on every organizational model as well. Having been through this work, you have an expanded intuition about changing the perspectives on all of the Business Model segments. You will never see personal careers or organizations the same way again. You will never be the same person either.

In addition to the time-sliced definition, the author gives a perturbative definition of path integrals which makes them invariant under coordinate transformations. A consistent implementation of this property leads to an extension of the theory of generalized functions by defining uniquely integrals over products of distributions. The powerful Feynman-Kleinert variational approach is explained and developed systematically into a variational perturbation theory which, in contrast to ordinary perturbation theory, produces convergent expansions. The convergence is uniform from weak to strong couplings, opening a way to precise approximate evaluations of analytically unsolvable path integrals. Tunneling processes are treated in detail. The results are used to determine the lifetime of supercurrents, the stability of metastable thermodynamic phases, and the large-order behavior of perturbation expansions. A new variational treatment extends the range of validity of previous tunneling theories from large to small barriers. A corresponding extension of large-order perturbation theory also applies now to small orders. Special attention is devoted to path integrals with topological restrictions. These are relevant to the understanding of the statistical properties of elementary particles and the entanglement phenomena in polymer physics and biophysics. The Chern-Simons theory of particles with fractional statistics (anyons) is introduced and applied to explain the fractional quantum Hall effect. The relevance of path integrals to financial markets is discussed, and improvements of the famous Black-Scholes formula for option prices are given which account for the fact that large market fluctuations occur much more frequently than in the commonly used Gaussian distributions. The author's other book on 'Critical Properties of Theories' gives a thorough introduction to the field of critical phenomena and develops new powerful resummation techniques for the extraction of physical results from the divergent perturbation expansions.

This is the fifth, expanded edition of the comprehensive textbook published in 1990 on the theory and applications of path integrals. It is the first book to explicitly solve path integrals of a wide variety of nontrivial quantum-mechanical systems, in particular the hydrogen atom. The solutions have been made possible by two major advances. The second is a new nonholonomic mapping principle carrying physical laws in flat spacetime to spacetimes with curvature and torsion, which leads to time-sliced path integrals that are manifestly invariant under coordinate transformations.

Remarkable... and gigantic

Though I haven't read very much of this enormous tome, I like the idea of reading it (some day). Kleinert has been extremely thorough here, and his expository style is excellent. One word of caution: if you're mathematically oriented and are looking for a rigorous foundation of functional integration of the kind used in Feynman's approach to quantum mechanics, you won't find it here. This book concerns itself more with explaining and displaying the many uses of path integration, than with the foundations of the subject. That said, I highly recommend this fascinating book.

Single-handedly revives the field of philosophy

Quintus Curtius is a philosopher. Philosophy itself, systematic inquiry into how people should live, has been a dead letter for a century or more. Political philosophy addresses the question of how we should order our collective lives to the greatest benefit of all. Moral philosophy attempts to tell us how we should treat our fellow man, to answer the question of what is the proper course of action in a given situation. Personal philosophy advises the indivual with regard to how to realize as much as possible of his God-given talents.

The major insight of the 20th century was that it couldn't be done. Everybody will come up with different answers, and given that all morality is relative, and happiness is defined differently by each individual, there can be no definitive philosophy. Why should we bother?

Curtius approaches the question of why we should bother from a number of different directions. Some of his essays are accounts of e feats by remarkable men who were motivated by their personal philosophies. We are inspired by the examples of intrepid explorers in the empty quarter of Arabia or an obscure corner of Antarctica, or the heroics, resolves, and teamwork of military men under extreme stress. In other essays he examines what the classical Greek and Roman philosophers, the Arabs who became intellectually dominant following Mohammed, and the Jewish and Christian philosophers of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Those of us Americans who were educated back when the pedagogues took their job seriously learned enough to know how much we did know. Few American schools teach the classics, but we were exposed to Plato, Augustine, Spinoza and other great minds to the extent that we regretted not knowing them better. Quintus Curtius is a balm for the soul. He has read virtually everything that you have heard of, in the original Greek, Latin and Arabic, and has the gift of being able to summarize briefly and eloquently, flattering the reader's intelligence. That is my first bit of advice in this review. Given that very few of us will have time to read the classic authors, reading Curtius is the next best thing. His essays are concise. He may not go into as much depth as other authors such as Ferdinand Mount or Will and Ariel Durant, but he deftly conveys the gist of the arguments.

His most thought-provoking articles are on morality. What matters more: the quality of the outcome, or the purity of the motives? One essay strongly supports letter position. What are our obligations to our family, community and nation? How do we arbitrate among conflicting demands? In one essay, he examines the classical arguments for and against marriage. He allows the skeptics' argument to stand, asserting that a man should enter marriage only for the purpose of having children, and only when he has found a close to ideal mate.

This is an area in which I wish Quintus Curtius would press further. The society, our civilization is brought forward through the ages not by the offspring of extraordinary people, but those of the average people who somehow rise upon occasion to become extraordinary. Somewhere among the obligations of a human being must be the duty of continuing the species, culture, tribe and clan. Curtius does not give it the attention I would like to see. On the other hand, I do not recall classical authors doing so either. Even Jewish and Christian Scripture, while they admonish people to behave in such a way that will encourage offspring, do not justify assuming the burden of parenthood beyond saying that it pleases the Lord and that children will be a crown of glory in one's old age.

One of the great pleasures of reviewing books is encountering towering intellects, people in whose presence I am sure I would feel quite humbled. I have enjoyed reviewing Richard Dawkins, Stephen Pinker, Richard Feynman, Daniel Kahneman and Nicholas Nassim Taleb. These are people who could have done anything that they wanted in life. They have chosen to increase mankind's knowledge, and have the gift of writing clearly and incisively to share what they have learned. I add Quintus Curtius to this company.

Curtius is a man of many parts. In this book we learn, among other things, that he was a Marine intelligence officer in Serbia and has worked as a lawyer. But his profession does not define him. He could find worldly success pursuing any number of paths. However, true to his philosophy, he continues the pursuit of knowledge of the classics, and the practice of writing essays to convey his insights to the rest of us. I leapt at the chance to read Pantheon, having vastly enjoyed his first book, Thirty Seven: Essays On Life, Wisdom, And Masculinity. Although the book is structured to let the reader put it down after any essay, I found myself not wanting to until I got to the end.

EXCELLENT WORK BY AN EXCELLENT AUTHOR!!!

This book is a triumph in every sense of the word. No one else is doing what this guy is doing, anywhere. It must have taken the author years of study to put together all of these essays as he did, using all original sources. You can read these essays multiple times and get different things out of them each time.
This is a collection of essays on moral, philosophical, and historical subjects. My favorites are "The Ghost of Christopher Hitchens" and "Fortress of the Mind." You have to read this book carefully, as every paragraph is dense with meaning. I never really understood Plato until I started going through the chapter on Plotinus.
Clearly Quintus is a master of the subject matter, and shows a range of vision that covers the European and Middle Eastern intellectual traditions. You get practical advice as well as spiritual guidance. I'm not finished with the book just yet, but I can tell that this is something that I'm going to draw on for years to come.

As soon as I heard Quintus Curtius was writing a 2nd book, I anxiously awaited its release, and a few hours after it was available on Amazon I was devouring it on my Kindle.

Pantheon delves into the lives of some of the most brilliant and daring men throughout history. He recreates their lives through engaging, narrative essays that have the perfect blend of excitement and erudition.

One of the things that makes Pantheon so unique is that it stands alone as a work of a true scholar in our modern world. Most books on the subject of masculinity repeat empty platitudes for 200 pages trying to hype up the reader; Pantheon does a more effective job without even trying!

This book is reminiscent of something a scholar would have created centuries ago and doesn’t resemble the books of the past 50 years; and that was his goal.

Our modern society, with its abundance of material comforts and unrelenting smugness, has exchanged masculine conviction and strength for a weak-kneed relativism, in which everything is so perfectly balanced out that we are left paralyzed with inaction.”

Just reading the Prologue got my heart pumping. You must read it yourself, but it explores the desperate attempts of British archeologist Howard Carter to discover the lost tomb of King Tut. All hope seems lost after his prolonged and frantic searching, and just as time is running down he reaps the fruits of his labor.

You failed and failed, and then, after agonizing labor in fits and starts, you won. He knew what the elements of success were: unerring faith in one’s own ability, the backing of a dedicated person, and a sustained period of grueling labor. These were the ingredients of victory.”

One of my favorite essays from Pantheon was the ‘Ghost of Christopher Hitchens’. I am a Hitchens fan myself (See my review of Arguably), and it was interesting to see Quintus devise this scenario.

Essentially QC and Hitchens get into a debate on the virtues (or lack thereof) of religion. Quintus argues that:

…religion performs an essential moral function. Religions are the vehicles by which a society’s moral code is transmitted to the generations. Originally, temporal rulers found it indispensable to cloak their laws and commands in the garb of religion.”

Religion often get the scorn of the ‘Red-Pill’ community, but I agree with Quintus and think it plays an integral role in our society.

The Pursuit of Masculinity

Pantheon is about the unbridled and unapologetic pursuit of masculinity, truth, wisdom, and virtue throughout history. In fact, it is a perfect example of why I started this site, and why it needs to be featured without question.

…new approaches to man’s ancient problems were desperately needed, and would be gratefully welcomed. The unchanging themes of the life of man had cried out for a new voice, and a new technique, that might give them a contemporary resonance.”

The Wisdom our Society Has Been Missing

Another desirable aspect of this book is the fact that Quintus is much older than others in this realm of the internet. That is by all means a compliment, because too often books of this nature are lacking in maturity.

These are the type of guys who spend a couple weeks working on an eBook, slap a price tag on it and shove it down your throat as a “MUST READ FOR ALL MEN” type of thing; not Pantheon.

Quintus’s love of history and philosophy is abundantly clear and he doesn’t need to rely on clever marketing tactics to get his book out there (If you’re not familiar with his work, check out his Return of Kings articles). This needs to be emphasized because books of this nature must come from someone who’s spent decades in this pursuit, which the reader can clearly see, most notably in his impressive translations of numerous languages.

There are many blogs and books out there written by men in their early 20’s (Such as myself) espousing their own views of the world. This is a good thing for a number of reasons, but there comes a point where a young man must draw a line that he will not cross because he simply doesn’t have the knowledge or experience to remark on certain subjects; sadly, that line is crossed too often.

That said, some of the essays can be tough to read as the language and style can be quite complex. This is especially the case in the section where he explains Neo-Platonic philosophies. I won’t even attempt to explain that section, as I need to go back and try and read it again myself.

Pantheon is truly a remarkable piece of work, and hopefully it will facilitate the growth of NeoMasculinity in our society. I doubt all men are up to the challenge of reading this book, but it is a highly rewarding one for those that are.

Prestressed concrete is a widely used material in construction. Hence, graduates of every civil engineering program must have, as a minimum requirement, a basic understanding of the fundamentals of linear and circular prestressed concrete. The high technology advancements in the science of materials have made it possible to construct and assemble large-span systems such as cable-stayed bridges, segmental bridges, nuclear reactor vessels, and offshore oil drilling platforms— work hitherto impossible to undertake.

Reinforced concrete's tensile strength is limited, while its compressive strength is extensive. Consequently, prestressing becomes essential in many applications in order to fully utilize the compressive strength and, through proper design, to eliminate or control cracking and deflection. Additionally, design of the members of a total structure is best achieved only by trial and adjustment: assuming a section and then analyzing it. Hence, design and analysis are combined in this work in order to make it simpler for the student first introduced to the subject of prestressed concrete design.

This third edition of the book extensively revises the previous text so as to conform to the new ACI 318-99 Code and the International Building Code, IBC 2000, for seismic design. The text is the outgrowth of the author's lecture notes developed in teaching the subject at Rutgers University over the past forty years and the experience accumulated over the years in teaching and research in the areas of reinforced and prestressed concrete inclusive of the Ph.D. level. The material is presented in such a manner that the student can become familiarized with the properties of plain concrete, both normal and high strength, and its components prior to embarking on the study of structural behavior. The book is uniquely different from other textbooks on the subject in that the major topics of material behavior, prestress loss, flexure, shear, and torsion are self-contained and can be covered in one semester at the senior level and the graduate level. The in-depth discussions of these topics permit the advanced undergraduate and graduate student, as well as the design engineer to develop with minimum effort a profound understanding of fundamentals of prestressed concrete structural behavior and performance.

The concise discussion presented in Chapters 1 through 3 on basic principles, the historical development of prestressed concrete, the properties of constituent materials, the long-term basic behavior of such materials, and the evaluation of prestress losses should give an adequate introduction to the subject of prestressed concrete. They should also aid in developing fundamental knowledge regarding the reliability of performance of prestressed structures, a concept to which every engineering student should be exposed today.

Chapters 4 and 5 on flexure, shear, and torsion, with the step-by-step logic of trial and adjustment as well as the flowcharts shown, give the student and the engineer a basic understanding of both the service load and the limit state of load at failure, thereby producing a good feel for the reserve strength and safety factors inherent in the design expressions. Chapter 4 in this edition contains the latest design procedure with numerical examples for the design of end anchorages of post-tensioned members as required by the latest ACI and AASHTO codes, inclusive of the "strut and tie" method of end anchorage design. All examples using single-tees were replaced by double-tees since use of single-tees is no longer current. Chapter 5 presents, with design examples, the provisions on torsion combined with shear and bending, which include a unified approach to the topic of torsion in reinforced and prestressed concrete members. SI units examples included in the text in addition to having equivalent SI conversions for the major steps of examples throughout the book. Additionally, a detailed theoretical discussion is presented on the mechanisms of shear and torsion, the various approaches to the torsional problem and the plastic concepts of the shear equilibrium and torsional equilibrium theories and their interaction.

Furthermore, inclusion in this edition of new design examples is SI Units and a listing of the relevant equations in SI format extends the scope of the text to cover wider applications by the profession. In this manner, the student as well as the practicing engineer can avail themselves with the tools for using either the lb-in. (PI) system or the international (SI) system.

Chapter 6 on indeterminate prestressed concrete structures covers in detail continuous prestressed beams as well as portal frames. Numerous detailed examples illustrate the use of the basic concepts method, the C-line method and the load-balancing method presented in Chapter 1. Chapter 7 was revamped and all the examples were changed using double-tees for deflection computation for both noncomposite and composite members. The chapter discusses in detail the design for camber, deflection, and crack control considering both short- and long-term effects using three different approaches: the PCI multipliers method, the detailed incremental time steps method, and the approximate time steps method. A state-ofthe-art discussion is presented, based on the author's work, of the evaluation and control of flexural cracking in partially prestressed beams. Several design examples are included in the discussion. Chapter 8 covers the proportioning of prestressed compression and tension members, including the buckling behavior and design of prestressed columns and piles and the P-Δ effect in the design of slender columns. A new section was added presenting a modified easier to use reciprocal method for biaxial bending design of columns.

Chapter 9 presents a thorough analysis of the service load behavior and yield-line behavior of two-way action prestressed slabs and plates. The service load behavior utilizes, with extensive examples, the equivalent frame method of flexural design (analysis) and deflection evaluation. Detailed discussion is given on shear-moment transfer and on deflection of two-way plates with computational examples. Extensive coverage is presented of the yield-line failure mechanisms of all the usual combinations of loads on floor slabs and boundary conditions, including the design expressions for these various conditions. Chapter 10 on connections for prestressed concrete elements covers the design of connections for dapped-end beams, ledge beams, and bearing, in addition to the design of the beams and corbels presented in Chapter 5 on shear and torsion.

This book is also unique in that Chapter 11 gives a detailed account of the analysis and design of prestressed concrete tanks and their shell roofs. Presented are the basics of the membrane and bending theories of cylindrical shells for use in the design of prestressed tanks for the various wall boundary conditions of fixed, semi-fixed, hinged, and sliding wall bases, as well as the incorporation of vertical prestressing. Chapter 11 also discusses the theory of axisymmetrical shells and domes that are used in the design of domed roofs for circular tanks.

A new and extensive Chapter 12 was added using the latest LRFD and Standard AASHTO specifications for the design of prestressed bridge deck girders for flexure, shear, torsion and serviceability, including the design of end-anchorage blocks. Several extensive examples are given using bulb-tees and box girder sections. The chapter also includes the AASHTO requirements for truck and lane loadings and load combinations as stipulated both by the LRFD and the Standard specifications.

A new and extensive Chapter 13 was added dealing with the seismic design of pre stressed precast structures in high seismicity zones based on the latest ACI 318-99 and the International Building Code, IBC 2000, on sesimic design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. It contains several design examples and a detailed discussion of ductile moment-resistant connections in high-rise buildings and parking garages in high seismicity zones and a unique approach for the design of such ductile connections inprecast beam-column joints. It also contains examples of the design of shear walls and hybrid connections— all based on the state of the art in this field.

It is important to emphasize that in this field, the use of computers is essential. Access to personal and handheld computers has made it possible for almost every student and engineer to be equipped with such a tool. Accordingly, Appendix A-1 presents a typical computer program in Q-BASIC for personal computers for the evaluation of time dependent losses in prestress. Other programs as described in the appendix can be purchased from N.C.SOFTWARE, Box 161, East Brunswick, New Jersey, 08816. The inclusion of extensive flowcharts throughout the book and the discussion of the logic involved in them makes it possible for the reader to develop or use such programs without difficulty.

Selected photographs involving various areas of the structural behavior of concrete elements at failure are included in all the chapters. They are taken from research work published by the author with many of his MS and Ph.D. students at Rutgers University over the past four decades. Additionally, photographs of some major prestressed concrete "landmark" structures, are included throughout the book to illustrate the versatility of design in pretensioned and post-tensioned prestressed concrete. Appendices have also been included, with monograms and tables on standard properties, beam sections and charts of flexural and shear evaluation of sections, as well as representative tables for selecting sections such as PCI double-tees, PCI/AASHTO bulb tees, box girder, and AASHTO standard sections for bridge decks. Conversion to SI metric units are included in the examples throughout most chapters of the book.

The topics of the book have been presented in as concise a manner as possible without sacrificing the need for instructional details. The major portions of the text can be used without difficulty in an advanced senior-level course as well as at the graduate level for any student who has had a prior course in reinforced concrete. There are several reasons not to use this book. The most important reason is that several of the example problems are solved incorrectly. These are commonly numerical mistakes, but in some cases, they are logically incorrect. This makes it extremely difficult to follow the complex theory involved in prestressed concrete. I suggest using another prestressed concrete text.
