I am in the midst of a serious crisis in our work environment. I purchased multiple books to help me evaluate our situation. This book was one of the best I read. It made me question why it's taken me so long to act on a problem that we have had for a while. Thank you for such a wonderful book that asked great questions to get me to realize how important this change is to our organization. This book will inspire you to be a better leader and it is quite easy to read. Some of my favorite passages are:

- "We're (leaders) presented with the chance to change a life."

- "Nothing really significant can ever be achieved unless people feel appreciated by their leader."

- "Extraordinary achievements never bloom in barren and unappreciate settings."

- "Leadership requires a resonant connection with others over matters of the heart."

- "Leadership is personal."

- "If you have people working for you in leadership roles who truly don't care if other people don't like them, THEN FIRE THEM." (emphasis I added)

My personal favorites, which just emphasized that my intuition was right along...

A Leader's Legacy`

I found the authors nailed it with this book. It's full of insights into being a leader. . . and in a conversational, easy to read format. The book is full of compelling stories, I read it in a couple of sittings.

I guess what I loved most about it was the common sense, no nonsense way leadership is viewed. Simple statements (not simplisitic) such as "We will work harder and more effectively for people we like. And we will like them in direct proportion to how they make us feel." As they point out we don't need to read mountains of studies on emotional intelligence to understand the truth of these words.

Writing useless books for dummies

This is the real specialty the authors of this book have mastered...
I am astonished at how many positive reviews this horrible, stinky title has received ... how many friends do this guys have? In fact this has got to be one of the worst tech book I have ever read, a total waste of money and paper.
My advice is , avoid this book, and any other book form the same authors, like plague! You will learn NOTHING from them.
The authors go on and on babbling about how unsecure wireless networks are, and are nonetheless unable to clearly indicate you any technique to take advantage or to protect form this weakness. All you get (apart from the boring and repetitive author's ruminations) are a few screenshots of NetStumbler (hey man, I can see by myself what it looks like, teach me how to use it instead ..), one screenshot of Kismet running on a linux xterm and a list of some of its command options (come on do you think that a beginner would ever be able to figure out how to use a open source tool like Kismet all by himself?)
Ah we also get a little advertisement for a couple of non-free tools like AiroPeek ... like a beginner should spend money on that? And , wait, there is no tutorial or intro on those tools as well. Just the usual couple of screenshots to make the book look good if you flip through it at the bookstore.
Seriously, I know this is hard to believe, but this pathetic excuse for a book is just a series of boring trivialities
For example ... did you ever think about the fact that installing a non-authorized, non-encrypted access point in your office network might actually be a security risk? I am sure you didn't, but thanks to this beautiful book you know, as the author spends pages and pages rambling and babbling about this absurd topic!
Years ago the "For Dummies" series used to be the right choice if you needed a humorous, tutorial-like but solid intro to a 'foreign' technology, but now the title is not a joke anymore.
"Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies".. true to its title!

Worth reading but don't expect to be an expert

Most of the Dummies series books are appetite wetters at best and that's where they end.

They touch on the advanced things but don't explain enough for you to really fully realize the potential of anything. It's sort of like going into a suntan studio with a 3/4 raincoat on. You might get something out of being there but not enough for it to really be useful.

This book is no exception.

While it does touch on things such as ARP poisoning and Net Stumbler as well as some other useful starting points, it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to expanding enough to make things worthwhile. It's a good introduction book but if you're planning on doing some real penetrations or penetration testing there are better books suited for this.

I would call this one a pre-reference reference book. At best.

Think your wireless network is secure from unauthorized use or attack? It's probably not. I just finished reading Hacking Wireless Network For Dummies by Kevin Beaver and Peter T. Davis, and this is one of the most practical books I've ever read for testing a network against attack.

The target of this book is the security professional involved in testing networks to make them more secure. There's a heavy emphasis on "ethical hacking", or learning how to test a network's security without doing harm or using the information in a destructive fashion. A security consultant using this book would learn how to pre-plan a test, work with the company to make sure they were properly authorized, and then write up the results in a professional manner. That aspect of the book is impressive, and it helps to frame the information in the right light (not as a textbook on how to break into networks).

From a practical standpoint, this book excels. Each of the chapters covers the theory behind how or why a certain aspect of a wireless network would be vulnerable to an attack or exploit. Then the authors cover a number of open source and commercial software packages that are available to focus on that area. For instance, chapter 14 goes into why WEP encryption is flawed and how it can be broken with relatively little effort. It's followed by an explanation on how WPA addresses some of those issues. Finally you get coverage on available tools that are used to crack WEP and how you can use them to test your own network.

Highly practical and heavy on application... If you're a security professional with responsibility for your organization's wireless network, you need to read this book. And if you're a techno-geek with your own wireless network, you'll want to get this book to play around. I know I will be doing a little hacking at Chez Duffbert...

What she writes and how she recommends you think and behave makes sense. `Your thoughts become your reality' in essence. There is no doubt that a positive and visionary outlook creates a good destiny for yourself and any encouragement of self-belief and self-worth can only have a positive impact. Donna writes well and gives a great `recipe' to follow to achieve your dreams. Worth the read.

A good entry to the industry

As a tour guide I was interested to see how this book held up to my own personal experiences on the road - I have to say it got it spot on. A couple of small things here and there related to personal preference but otherwise the best book I've read so far on the topic. Introductory topics include things like how to design a tour and how to get a job. Later chapters cover advanced material such as dealing with problems, freelancing, asking for tips and more (the table of contents is quite impressive - see for yourself via the 'Look Inside' feature, ).

I was pleased to see the book was realistic in it's portrayal of the guiding industry - it didn't shy away from giving the good and the bad about the job. It was also refreshingly practical with clear, step by step processes most people should find easy to follow to achieve results. There was theory to back it up, but in essence this is a more hands on book with lots of good advice. This would be good book for beginners or those wondering about the industry but should also provide insights for those already well established. 5 stars!

In summary:
Buy this if you interested in becoming a tour guide, tour manager or tour director.
Don't buy this if you're about to go on a tour as a client - you'll learn all our secrets ;)

I received this book as a gift last December, from a friend wanting to encourage my career change. The title says it all: How to Become a Tour Guide. From problem patrons to talking about tips, the author Nick Manning takes the reader through the “ins and outs” of the tour trade in a style that is both highly-informative and entertaining.
Having recently returned from a tour of Italy, this book gave me insights into the tour director and the dynamics of our group travelling by bus. Better yet, Nick’s book helped me organize my resume of relevant experiences in preparation for a phone interview, and subsequently an in-person interview with the local administrators of a tour company.

Good book for interfacing RS232 devices

I like this book, but wish the price were a bit lower. There is another very similar book covering lab instead of home automation equipment that actually goes into more depth on the VB6 programming side of things yet is about 1/4 the price. I own both books and refer to them both when needed. This book does a good job of documenting how to communicate over an RS232 connection via the mscomm32.ocx which is included in the VB6 professional and enterprise editions. Having said that, I can also tell you from experience that an internet search will turn up some very good information on this topic, so don't base your buying decision on only that part of the picture. The author's choice of an AB PLC shouldn't present too big a hurdle as each manufacturer employs a different command structure and methodology for communicating with their equipment. It is ultimately up to you to find the command language your equipment uses; if you aren't up to that then perhaps you aren't quite ready to tackle this kind of a project just yet. The point is, once you are comfortable using mscomm32 you should be able to use it with any PLC available as long as the PLC speaks RS232. If you would like a home automation system and the satisfaction that goes along with building your own this book will get you headed in the right direction and is the real reason for buying it. I can promise you that once you get started you will begin to see possibilities you never expected. The system you ultimately build and program will probably be much more complete and fulfilling than the one in the book. If you are in the dot-net world then this book will be of more limited use to you since MS decided to abandon their active-x platform. If you are one of the lucky ones who still owns VB6 then this book is a good addition to your library. Just remember that the big boys at MS are pulling the plug on VB6 support with any version of Windows past Win-7, so your project will run on Win-95 thru Win-7 but on nothing later. Of course there's Mac with Boot Camp and Linux with Wine if you want to run your program on something other than a Windows PC.

Need to repackage

The general intent of the author is interesting but he blows it by writing the book based on the AB PLC which is expensive and not generally popular with Hobbyists and DIY folks.

The book will certainly have a lot more appeal had it been written based on PIC's or Basic stamp microcontrollers. However, I found the chapters on RS232 interfacing very useful and am keeping it for that reason.

About the Author
John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches educational psychology every year at the undergraduate level. In 2006, John received the University of Texas at Dallas Excellence in teaching award. His research has included publications in the Journal of Educational Psychology that focus on the contextual aspects of affectively-toned cognition and children's self-regulatory behavior as well as teachers' perceptions of children from divorced families. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology and Child Development. His publications include these exceptional McGraw-Hill texts: Child Development, 13th Ed; Life-Span Development, 14th Edition; Adolescence, 14th Edition; Psychology, 7th Edition; and Educational Psychology, 4th Edition.

Access code to online learning not included

Book arrived without access codes, had to purchase codes separately from McGraw-Hill. Took a McGraw-Hill tech support staff almost two hours to help me out once I had purchased the online learning separately to connect with my blackboard. I also purchased a supposedly "new" book, it arrived and was in excellent condition, except for the text that was highlighted. So, it was not a new textbook. Disappointed with this experience. Amazon helped me out greatly, but I was disappointed with this experience.

The book was in perfect brand new condition when it arrived, it arrived in perfect packaging for the item. I not only received it in a timely manner, I received it a week prior to the listing suggested! As a school book that was absolutely perfect. The book itself is in great shape and I am ready to start another Psychology class! THank you.

Quite Insightful!

This textbook is a must-have for anyone who has an interest in psychology. Even for a bit of background knowledge it is useful. It came brand new and was well packaged (protected from harm). Amazon definitely offers great deals and this book is one of them for none of my local bookstores offered such a cheap price as Amazon (hands-down). The textbook is well designed as well and organized in a thoroughly manner.
