As a College Baseball coach myself Brian Cain takes you into the mind of one of the if not the best College Baseball coach to every step onto the diamond. The motivational quotes and stories can be used not just in the sports world but also in real life as well.

Opens your mind (if you let it)

I'm a fashion designer and I have training in classic pattern making. This is NOT a book to make standard clothes.
This is a book to explore pattern making beyond traditional limits. However, some clothes in this book can be done for wear (see a pair of draped pants) and some could be done with a little adjustment. It's perfect for fashion design students, fashion professionals and costume designers.
If you want to explore your creativity, go far beyond your own imagination and learn some new forms to approach pattern making, this book if for you.
If you just want to make a classic dress for a party, better buy another book.
I recommend this one and the other two previous books (Pattern magic I and II, also in english).

Incredible again....

for those of us who get it....As with her previous books this one won't disappoint. I was surprised that 80% of what's here can be duplicated by the novice home sewer...and that these shapes while I will tone them down a bit can be formed by using knits--- two peas in a pod AWESOME---apple seed I WISH---and pattern mystery--thinking of a way to incorporate into my own dolman or pullover --...FULL sloper pattern included in this one....Great you're not up for the challenge put it on your coffee table. It will invoke some interesting talk...

An great follow up from the previous books

The book is split into two parts, the first is about seeing garments in a different perspective and creative cuts and the second part is on how to use the properties of stretch fabrics through drape and manipulation. A few of the styles would slot seamlessly into the previous books.
The book is all about manipulating fabric. It's not about flattering the body rather it's about what can be done with the constraints you have in garment design. The aesthetics is in appreciating this.

It's a fantastic reference book and I've seen some of these styles (from all 3 books) being used in actual collections (Levi's, Sara Philips and Gail Sorronda). The apple peel shape is something I've already seen from Levi's with their jeans for example. In regards to the designers and author, I couldn't say who did it 'first'.

The instructions, line drawings and photos go into great detail and having a few patterns in the book really is a added bonus which gets you excited about trying some of these ideas. I'm glad that it has been translated as I bought the first two books in Japanese before the English translation ones came out as the concepts, photos and line drawings were worth buying the book alone (I did buy the first two again in English).

Two books I also recommend as 'companions' to these are the Drape Drape books by Hisako Sato.

The multi asset class Yale Model has long been hailed in the US as representing the very best that portfolio theory has to offer, placing Yale consistently in the top percentile for investment performance. Yet it has not been widely adopted, and outside the US remains largely unrecognised.

Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy shows how unthinking mistrust of so-called 'alternative' assets, and an inability validly to compare results across asset classes on any traditional risk-adjusted basis, has led to institutional investors, particularly pension funds, missing out on the out-performance which a multi asset class approach can offer.

Guy Fraser-Sampson demonstrates how the returns of different assets classes (hedge funds, private equity, property, etc) may validly be compared with those of quoted equity markets. He argues for an adoption of MAC investing (his own multi asset class investment model), and demonstrates how this can improve investment performance across a range of portfolios. He gives guidance on each asset class, including historic performance figures (many of which have not previously been publicly available). The book also offers the author's own unique approach to many issues for institutional investors, including risk, liquidity and Total Funding.

About the Author
GUY FRASER-SAMPSON has twenty years' experience of the investment industry across a range of asset classes, most notably private equity. His career has included a spell as Investment Controller with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and setting up and running for several years the European operations of one of the world's leading fund of funds managers.
Guy is a well-known figure on the conference circuit, both as a speaker and as a panellist. His first major speech on MAC investing (to the UK's National Association of Pension Funds in 2005) sparked media attention around the globe and helped to establish MAC investing as one of the current hot topics of the investment world. He is the inventor of the Total Funding Model, by which pension funds can calculate their target rate of investment return, and previously developed a model for analysing the performance of buyout managers.
Guy Fraser-Sampson has an LLB with Honours from King's College London and an MBA majoring in finance from Warwick Business School. Originally a practising lawyer, he was made an equity partner in a City of London law firm at the age of 26, having been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts a year earlier. Guy has contributed many articles over the years to investment and pension publications, but this is his first book.

Fresh Yale Model Thoughts

Guy Fraser-Sampson with his first book, Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy, has made a huge contribution to practice of portfolio theory.

Picking up where David Swensen in his book Pioneering Portfolio Management leaves off, Fraser-Sampson demonstrates how blind faith in so-called "alternative assets" and faulty risk-adjusted performance metrics cause institutional investors to under-perform market measures.

The author shows how different asset class - hedge funds, private equity, real estate, etc. - returns can be compared to those of listed equities. At the risk of simplifying his thoughts, the author argues portfolio managers need to adopt a long-term view. Returns must be compounded over many years. Not, as the current obsession requires, earned quarter-to-quarter.

The fact that most of the illustrations in this book are drawn from UK data in no way detracts from the validity of its message. It is clear and pragmatic. The Yale Model represents the best Portfolio Theory has to offer. Combine it with Fraser-Sampson's unique thoughts on risk, liquidity and Total Funding; it represents the future of institutional investing.

An excellent and entertaining treatment of the subject

Guy Fraser-Samson builds on the Yale Model to institutional investing, so I somehow expected another version of Swensen's "Pioneering Portfolio Management". However, "Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy" is in my eyes a huge improvement and a surprisingly entertaining and satisfying read. Guy Fraser-Samson is a brilliant writer, with a real talent for describing a complex subject. His book is down to earth, light-hearted and full of analogies that make the subject easy to grasp and interesting. It covers a wide range of subjects and demonstrates that brevity really is the sister of talent. I personally found his discussion of risk as particularly practical and relevant. "Multi Asset Class Investment Strategy" is the perfect starting point to learn more about a portfolio management approach that so far - at least in Europe - has not received sufficient attention.

Breathing life into Investment theory

This book was launched in the United Kingdom a couple of months ago and has already sparked new and fresh debate on the subject amongst academics and experts alike. This publication will no doubt have the same effect in the US.

It builds on David Swensen's 'Yale Endowment' model, offering a critique and new thinking that easily roles off the page given its light hearted and sometimes comic narrative.

The book is Fraser-Sampson's first and one that he embarked on after realising the potential in his theory whilst addressing the National Association of Pension Funds a few years ago to much aclaim. Already a relatively well known name amongst investment strategists in Europe, it would seem likely that this publication will see Fraser-Sampson equally well recognised in the States.

Struggled

I struggled to finish this book. I really did not like the leading lady. Olivia was obnoxious and killed the story for me. I found it extremely hard to believe anyone could fall in love with her because she wasn't love able. The author didn't really give us a reason why people would feel loyal to her. The story had it all, just she was a dud.

Hummmm what can I say...Olivia a single Mom, Damon an Alpha Male, Alex an adorable toddler, two broken people who have lost people they loved, a nasty Mother, crazy lovable friends & family, psycho ex- boyfriend, sperm donor, drunken marriage in Vegas to a one night stand! Tears of joy, tears of sadness, unexpected twists... YUP this book has it all and you'll love it! Great job Sadie!

Mich�le Halberstadt is a journalist, author, and producer of such films as Mr. Ibrahim, Farewell My Concubine, and Murderous Maids, which she also cowrote. In his bedroom was a low chest with five drawers, and the bottom one was reserved for me. I could arrive unexpectedly, yet find a surprise hidden there every time. A gift, a handkerchief, a lollipop, it didn’t matter. That was a promise he’d made me and he never once broke it. That permanently restocked drawer represented the infallible proof of his love for me. He did not treat me like a granddaughter, like a little girl. He considered me a person with whom to share and exchange things to read, points of view, essential discoveries.
���For example, when I was six, one day when the two of us were having lunch in his kitchen, he placed before me a white plate bearing a regal ch�vre cendr�. He knew that I hated cheese in general and this kind in particular, because to me goat cheese tasted like soap, but he was immensely fond of ch�vre cendr�, therefore it was impossible that his granddaughter should not share this predilection. So he uncorked a bottle of Bordeaux, placed a bit of ch�vre on a small piece of still warm toast lightly spread with salted butter, and explained to me precisely how the flavor of the cheese would be accentuated by the wine’s acidity. His blue-footed wineglass clinked mine to celebrate my first tasting as a connoisseur, in the certainty that from then on, just as we shared a straight nose, drooping eyelids, and the inveterate habit of constantly humming, his favorite cheese would also be mine.
���He was facetious, imperious. He understood everything and I could tell him frightening secrets he would never have thought to make fun of. He was not judgmental, never reproving, and aside from lapses in good manners, about which he was intransigent, he was quick to forgive. Mockery was his usual tack, repartee his besetting sin, generosity his Achilles’ heel. His humor made the world cozier, his tenderness cushioned my days. Nothing could ever happen to me as long as he was there, and I had never envisaged a life without him as its center.
