About the Author
About the Author Roxanne Small is a registered physical therapist with over 35 years of experience in pediatrics. Her career has included working in hospitals, schools, homes, and clinics. Roxanne teaches a course in "Developmental Environments" to health care professionals working in the field of early intervention. She and her teaching partner, Julie Erbaugh, PT also teach professional seminars regarding Chronologically Controlled Developmental Therapy. In addition, Roxanne has been a guest speaker at conventions and meetings, speaking on topics relating to sensory-motor foundations in children. The first edition of Building Babies Better was published in 2005. Roxanne has more than 25 years of first-hand experience as a parent. Roxanne and her husband, Gary, have three children, all of whom have been the motivation and impetus for Building Babies Better.

This book is an excellent resource for birth parents, adoptive parents, parents of children with disabilities, nannies, teachers and caregivers alike. The activities are clear and simple, easy to add in to your regular routines and play times. This second edition is a lovely upgrade to the first. Endless benefits of interactive facilitation of proper physical development. I give it as a shower gift to every expecting parent!

Latin necessary, Good Scholarly Book

This is an excellent study of the character of Lady Meed in Langland's Piers Plowman, and of medieval venality satire (that is poetry on the evils of money). Three-fourths of the book is merely quotations and commentary on Latin verse satire. No translations are provided, as this book is clearly addressed to the typical audience of Medieval literature scholars. So if you do not read Latin, you will not derive very much benefit from it. I have taken a few years of Latin, but I did not take the time to fully translate each poem, as it would have taken too much time. Much of it also is not very good poetry, at least not as literature. Yunck mostly quotes this poetry as a proof that there was a ton of this poetry, and spends quite a bit of time (about 200 pages) cataloguing and describing this body of poetry in detail. While this book could definitely be shorter, it is useful if you are a scholar doing research in Medieval Latin verse satire, admittedly a small subset of the population. Also, the last chapter is a detailed analysis of the Lady Meed episode in Langland. This is where Yunck is at his best. Meed is characterized as the embodiment of the dangers that an overdependence of money plays in Medieval society. I recommend for the undergraduate English major who is writing a paper on Lady Meed to read the first part of the firs chapter and the last chapter, maybe even the second to last chapter which deals with Chaucer's treatment of this theme, and skim the majority of the book, especially if they have no Latin. I also heartily recommend this book for any medievalist who wishes for more information on the genre of venality satire. Much Latin is required. French is also recommended, as there is a chapter on French satire.
